When you apply to US graduate schools, you should understand that the competition will be stiff?. My economics department at the University of New Orleans (www. uno.edu) gets the majority of its PhD applications from Mainland Chinese. Curiously, the GRE scores on’ these applications are far superior to those on applications from Americans. One year the page listing the top scores had only one American — the rest were Chinese! No doubt the Chinese study harder for the examination for financial aid will be stiff, and only the best bother to apply. Yet because we are supported by the state of Louisiana, we are obliged to give priority to local applicants.
When writing an application, one should bear in mind that the readers will know little about China. I recall a discussion in which one professor argued for taking student A because he was from People’s University, which he had heard was a Tag Heuer Replica top school. Another argued for candidate B because he was from Rennin University, allegedly a very good school. It was not immediately understood that both candidates were from the same institution!
Since the readers know so little about China, supply details that establish why a given fact in one’s record is significant. For instance, if one has won an honor, say why the honor was bestowed and how many people received it. For instance, you might explain that XYZ Award is given for excellence in scientific research by undergraduates, at ABC University; only two students a year receive it. Or suppose you state that you were named an outstanding graduate” — then go on to say that only the top 5 % of graduating seniors receive this honor. If a Chinese university is highly respected institution, say so (even if Chinese readers all know it). The school might, for instance, be on the government’s list of key universities; to give the fact its full value, mention how many Chinese universities there are and how many of them are labeled “key” universities.
Similarly, it may be useful to remind readers just how strong foreign competition in China. Recently, I was looking for a student who came in from the fifth province of the national university entrance examination. Province, as it happens, there are about 35 million inhabitants, yet few Westerners knew the name. If someone in a row in the United States or European countries, the general national examination Fifth, we would probably be very happy to have him. I recommend students to tell readers how many people in his province, to a more well-known European countries ("the province of 35 million people, almost like Spain or Poland.")
Readers will be rushing to get through a thick pile of applications. Members of the admission committee do not get any special rewards for reading essays carefully. In my department the only essays that get any real attention are’ those from candidates with outstanding test scores. Essays will be read quickly and then forgotten, unless an application should comb his academic history or personal experience for anything that makes him Tag Heuer Link Replica stand out, and then highlight it. Perhaps one completed an outstanding research project, or has written a book, or has obtained a patent on an invention. Perhaps one has quickly reached a high supervisory position in a company. Such accomplishments should figure prominently in the essay.
Saying things that everyone else says will do nothing to advance one’s chances. Paragraphs about how one will contribute to China after getting a doctorate, or about how marvelous the target school supposedly is — all of this adds nothing of value to an application essay. One may wish to mention these matters if one has something concrete to say, but the emphasis should be elsewhere: on why one is able to finish a program with intellectual distinction and be a credit to the target university in the US. Again, hot air does not help; find solid evidence that leads to favorable conclusions regarding one’s promise in a given field. -The best evidence that one will eventually succeed is having already succeeded.

In the quest for a better body, the battle of the bulge, comes yet another quick fix diet book based on short term weight loss through high protein meals.
The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization’s (CSIRO) Total Wellbeing Diet book entered the Australian market over a year ago and topped the best seller’s list, dazzling the public with “scientifically proven” research.
Claiming to be not just a weight loss program, but also a diet plan for lifelong eating, the CSIRO
Total Wellbeing Diet has been criticised for a number of reasons.
Dietary recommendations 300 per day, about double the other control calorie diet recommended amount of meat, not to mention, the Australian Government 65-100 grams of meat consumption in the proposed meat g three to four times a week.
But before even looking at the health ramifications of eating meat to an even lesser degree, it is most interestingly noted that the Meat and Livestock Industry and Dairy Australia funded the CSIRO’s diet book.
No surprise then that beef, lamb, veal and dairy products all play a huge part in the make up of this meal plan.
Nutritionists Rosemary Stanton and Gyorgy Scrinis publicly criticised the CSIRO of prostituting itself to Australia’s meat and dairy industries suggesting the science the diet is based on to be less than credible.
"The vision of the CSIRO diet high in meat may be an indication of the extent to which our scientists have taken on the role of consultants in the industry in their efforts to raise funds, and their willingness to deliver survey results that the industry agree,
For a so-called “scientific” diet, the biased recommendations seem to pay no heed to the surmounting research that diets too high in animal protein can lead to a number of serious disorders including heart disease, increased cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and cancer.
The China Study, is considered the most comprehensive study of diet, lifestyle and disease ever completed related to the Chinese population and low incidence of such western health problems like obesity, diabetes, certain cancers and cardiovascular disease herbal diet, low in animal products.
Evidently the researchers of the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet didn’t include the China Study in their research or chose to ignore it’s facts when creating a diet plan so heavily based on animal products.
Research from this important study confirmed the following information:
? Plasma cholesterol in the 90-170 milligrams per decilitre range is positively associated with most cancer mortality rates. Plasma cholesterol is positively associated with animal protein intake and inversely associated with plant protein intake.
? For those at risk for liver cancer (for example, because of chronic infection with hepatitis B virus) increasing intakes of animal-based foods and/or increasing concentrations of plasma cholesterol are associated with a higher disease risk.
Cardiovascular diseases associated with a lower intake of green vegetables and higher concentrations of apo-B (a form of so-called bad cholesterol in the blood), associated with increased intake of animal protein and reducing the intake of vegetable protein.
Cancer consistently inversely with intake of 14 different fiber fractions (although only), a statistically significant. Stomach cancer is reversed with green vegetables and plasma concentrations of beta-carotene and vitamin C will receive associate, only from plant foods.
? Western-type diseases, in the aggregate, are highly significantly correlated with increasing concentrations of plasma cholesterol, which are associated in turn with increasing intakes of animal-based foods.
In addition to the irresponsible recommendation of a high animal protein diet, the book boasts of a “major” scientific study.
This “scientific” research was a single sex study conducted on a mere 100 women, for a period of only 12 weeks. Half of the group ate the researchers’ preferred meat-centred, high protein and moderate carbohydrate diet.
The other half of the group was placed on a diet higher in carbohydrates in which some of the meat was replaced with pasta or rice.
It was noted that the two groups lost a statistically comparable amount of weight over the 12 weeks.
For the CSIRO diet book’s researchers to claim that this study scientifically proves a high protein diet to be most effective is an embellishment of the research findings. For the record, I am not a vegetarian, all my meat sources though are organic and I try to limit red meat to twice a week.
I only had to really open one page of this book to realise its inadequacies. It actually recommended margarine to butter. I challenge any scientist to debate the health benefits of a trans fat over organic butter.
Although it is possible that short-term results may be achieved by following the CSIRO’s Total Wellbeing Diet, it is evident that the serious health risks involved, especially in adapting the diet as an eating plan for life, outweigh the benefits this self-proclaimed leading dietary authority recommends.
